The Doctor Who TV Movie Gets a Surprise 4k Remaster
The Doctor Who TV Movie is coming to 4K Blu-ray with a brand new remaster, and Who fans, we did not see this coming. Genuinely surprised. Genuinely delighted.
The 1996 TV Movie has been newly restored for 4K and will land on Ultra HD and standard Blu-ray. For a story that often sits in a strange corner of Doctor Who history, this feels like a proper moment. And about time.
A Worthy Restoration
The TV Movie has always looked different, for better or worse. Bigger budget, yep. More cinematic direction, yep. I always felt it had that quintessential “mid 90s US TV” look about it. You know, The X-Files, Buffy, ER, etc. For us here in the UK, that “NTSC look”.
We didn’t really care that much, to be honest, but due to that technological Cybermat, we’ve never had a “proper” transfer here in the UK. The runtime was off, and as a result, the audio pitch was slightly higher than it should have been. The image also looked slightly softer than it should, too. Even on the Blu-ray release from a few years ago.
However, this nugget of info from the official Doctor Who article has us excited…
The TV Movie has never looked or sounded so good, with a 24-frame transfer to match the original film rushes…
Music to our ears! Finally, a decent PAL release to enjoy the movie as intended.
This wouldn’t be possible without the work of restoration extrordinair Paul Vanezis; it’s been restored from the original film reels (all 219 reels of them!) for 4K. It should finally let those visuals shine the way they were meant to.
On a related topic, I interviewed Paul last year on our Blake’s 7 podcast, Federation Strike, about his work on the Blake’s 7 restoration and clean up for Series A (and now Series B) Blu-ray releases. It’s a fascinating listen, grab it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or search for it in your fav podcast app.
I can not wait to see the Gothic Cloister Room and that glowing, cathedral-like TARDIS console room in all that restored detail. This story was built for high definition. We’ll take any excuse to revisit it.
Why This Release Matters
A 4K remastered Blu-ray release sends a clear message: the TV Movie is not a footnote or a throwaway part of the classic era. It means something to lots of fans.
For long-time fans like us, it is a chance to rewatch it in the best quality possible. For newer fans, it’s a great opportunity to see where the Eighth Doctor began on screen.
The Blu-ray Offerings
The Doctor Who TV Movie will be available as a standard Blu-ray release plus a special edition Steelbook.

We’ll be picking this up. No hesitation! Double, triple dipping… I’ve spent more on coffee in a month than this! Here’s a list of the special features:
- The ‘uncensored’ UK version
- The USA broadcast version
- Soundtrack in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 and stereo
- In Conversation with Director Geoffrey Sax
- Sylvester McCoy and Janet Fielding featurette
- 3 New Featurettes with Daphne Ashbrook, Eric Roberts and Yee Jee Tso
- Two audio commentaries
- Isolated music score
- Production info text
- The Seven Year Hitch making-of documentary
- Paul McGann’s audition tape
- Alternate takes
- Electronic press kit and behind-the-scenes footage
- TARDIS tour
- BBC Trails
- and more
Two that stand out for me are the “‘uncensored’ UK version” and “USA broadcast version”. Slightly different edits which provides lenghty pub chatter (which I can confirm firsthand). The other features also look great with a new “In Conversation” interview, featurettes and more.
When you consider this release, plus the ongoing Blu-ray Collection Sets from the classic era, we really are spoilt as Doctor Who fans sometimes.
Pre-order links will be up soon, and we’ll pop them on our socials when they arrive.
What are your thoughts, Who fans? Will you be picking this up? Maybe you’re emotionally attached to your early DVD or VHS release as a purist? Whatever your view, let us know in the comments below.
